What I'm Lovin'...

I have a pretty eclectic decor ethic in my home but
one color (or lack of color) ties it all together beautifully.

The prevalent color you will find throughout

my house (and my closet!) is BLACK.

Yes, I lean a little toward the dark side.

I love black. It compliments everything, it contrasts everything.

It provides drama, grace and elegance.

So while everyone else is drooling over

white painted furniture and walls,

This weekend was a true testament to the devotion of the

Chartreuse and Co. clientele.

They braved frigid temps and snow, sleet and

freezing rain to come out for our monthly Tag Sale.

This month was our yearly Super Sale and customers were treated

to rock bottom prices on amazing vintage, antique, industrial,

handmade, jewelry, accessories and vintage and french inspired goodies.

Soooo, now we are ready to start fresh and get the barn

ready for an amazing Tag Sale next month!

New Years Evaluation and Evolution

New Years Resolution?

UHUH, NOT ME.

I don't like the way New Years resolutions make me feel.

They make me feel pressured.
Resolutions seem so final and when I

can't follow through, for whatever reason, I just feel defeated.

I DON'T LIKE THAT FEELING.

Sooooo, this year I have opted to do a
New Years Evaluation and Evolution.

Yup, I have taken a long hard look at the
last year and evaluated. I have decide to evolve...
to weed out some things, keep some things

and embrace some things that I have been suppressing.

I'm gonna start chasing my own dreams again.
I've never been a girl who tries to fit in, follow "the norm",
and do what everyone else is doing.

Frankly, I just don't find that there is any courage in that path.

I've made a list.

A list of the things that I love. The things that make me tick.

The things that inspire and excite me.

These are the things that will define my
shop and my jewelry line this year.

antiques and vintage,

metal and wood, patina and rust,

leather and lace, dark and gothic, rock and roll,
funky and edgy, sparkly and shiny, rough and rustic,

masculine and military, ruffles and rhinestones,

rough and rogue mixed with soft and girlie

unique and spirited, brazen and bold

So with that said...

I've been workin' hard on branding my unique and edgy jewelry and accessories line.

Easy Canvas...Easy Decor

Recently I was presented with the opportunity to try the products at

Easy Canvas Prints and review their products and service.

I had been wanting to order a canvas print anyway, so when opportunity knocked...I answered.

Happily, my experience with Easy Canvas Prints was exactly that...EASY!

I am an avid photographer so choosing a photo from my collection

was the longest part in the ordering process.

Once I chose my photo, the actual ordering took me

less than 15 minutes start to finish!

I decided to use a photo of my "happy place,"

Big Meadows at Shenandoah National Park.

My Great Great Grandparents lived at Big Meadows before it

became a National Park. The ruins of their homestead is still there

today and they are buried just a short walk from the homestead site.

The photo I chose is a photo of the meadow that I took in

October 2008. The Meadow bursts with color in the fall and

I love the contrast of all of the colors in this photo.

Once I selected my photo, all I had to do was complete an

easy 4 step ordering process on the Easy Canvas Prints website.

1) Choose the size of your canvas.

I chose and 8x10

2) Upload your image.

3) Select your border options. You can choose a colored border,

a mirrored image border or an image wrap.

I chose a black border.

4) Order color finishing and image retouching.

Color finishing allows you to choose black and white or sepia toned finishes.

Image retouching can be minor or major.

Minor Retouching can:

fix dust or scratches, red eye and minor imperfections

Major Retouching can:

add or remove objects or people

remove scars, blemishes and wrinkles

whiten teeth

and restore vintage photographs

That's it...an easy 4 step process. Shortly thereafter a nicely wrapped package arrives on your doorstep.

Here is my beautiful Easy Canvas print. I LOVE it!

It arrived ready to hang.

The options for home decor are immense when ordering your Easy Canvas print.

I have had great success with taking photos of vintage

It's the Annual Yard Sale Event at Chartreuse and Co.

What a beauty this cabinet is. Sorry...I had removed
the hardware for cleaning and had not put them
all back on before I took this pic.

Way cool stuff!

I LOVE bottles so I fell head over heels for this
oil on canvas of old bottles.I am having a hard time
parting with it. It may come back home.

Two of my favorite things at the shop this month are the
vintage baby carriage wheels and the little bottles
with numbers. Each one has a scroll of vintage
sheet music or a clipping from a vintage book.

Chemistry bottles and old steam valves.

This weeks Element of Vintage Style...BURLAP!

Burlap is rustic, textural and charming all at the same time. Me, I love to use it for curtains, ornamental pillows and table runners. I love the look of burlap on chairs, but lets face it...it's a bit uncomfortable to curl up in a burlap covered chair and read your favorite decorating mags. Burlap is one of my "must haves" in decorating but I tend to use it to add texture and for it's aspects of vintage charm. Burlap evokes a time when a trip to town meant bringing home burlap bags of goods and livestock feed. A time when everything was repurposed and reused....even burlap. My mom cringes everytime I mention burlap in conjunction with home decor but...I. JUST. CAN'T. GET. ENOUGH!

Elements of Vintage Style...MAPS

This weeks Element of Vintage Style...MAPS

I love maps! Maybe it's my love of graphics that make them so appealing me. Maybe it's the colors.
I'm not sure what makes them so charming
to me but whatever it is, I'm most certainly not the only one.

Maps have become a huge thing in the vintage style decor market.
Sure, there are great repros out there but when you can get your hands on the real mccoy the satisfaction is much greater. My favs are the old roll down versions that hung in classrooms. Framed maps of some of our favorite family destinations are a close runner-up.

I love everything about this room. The bold color on the walls. The chippy farmhouse table. The chest...and mmmm that globe. The color on the table is followed through in the color chosen for the walls in the next room. The color of the chest is a mix of the two colors. It all makes for a nice transition from bold to subtle color. This room has quite an impact.

Nautical maps are really great for beach houses, lake houses and bay front homes. A whole theme has been built around this nautical map. I love how the frame is just placed over the map instead of actually framing it. Very simple things are done here that create a ton of visual interest in this otherwise bare corner.

This is an ingenious use of maps! A lot of people love the look of mulitiple paned doors but still want their privacy. You get the effect of the panes but still maintain privacy. The panes become individual frames for the maps. Love it!!

Graphics, texture and color...well done! The theatre seats are just too cool. I think what I love most here is the contrast of the print on the quilt and the graphics on the map. The contrast in the deep wood tones of the chairs are perfect against crisp white walls and the white bed.

Well worn chicken nesting boxes with great patina.

I adore the ironstone pieces against the galvanized metal. Display your collections or organize your mudroom or craft room with this beauty. It can be mounted on the wall or placed on top of a favorite vintage server, buffet or chest of drawers.

Vintage gameboard.

I love this piece! In fact, I have one very similar to it on my front porch. It sits on a vintage aluminum table and hubby and I play evening checker games on it in the summer.

Mounted on a wall it is an instant vintage art piece.

The perfect little red metal stool.

What a great find! My favorite picker found this for me! Such a charming vintage chalkboard. It was hard not to just keep this one at home in my kitchen!

You'll begin to sense a "school" theme here. Vintage wood school desk/chair combo. Beautiful, richly aged wood. Imagine all of the learning that took place at this little beauty.

They don't make 'em like this any more! A vintage metal globe with awesome colors and graphics.

Today, if you buy a globe at the store it will be cheap molded plastic with paper graphics pasted on...

not really built to last. This metal beauty has stood the test of time.

Another beautiful vintage wood school chair.

Lots of wood and metal boxes.See that little shoe store stool at the bottom. I remember, when I was a little girl, propping my feet up on these to have the shoe store clerk measure my feet on one of those little "slidy" measuring things.

Vintage decanters and elegant vintage statuary. More industrial signage. I love the contrasts here!

Lots of vintage bar ware this month.

My favs are silver rimmed pieces.

Lovin' these turquoise glasses. Beautiful! They remind me of old turquoise canning jars. Another fav of mine.

First up...ZINC!
Let it be known that I LOVE metal!
Silver and Grey tend to be my "go to" colors.
I am very in to contrasts when I decorate and zinc is almost always a contrast to whatever it is placed next to. It adds an element of rustic charm.
And the PATINA...
the PATINA that zinc gets is unmatched by anything else.

Check out the faux zinc finish on this desk. I'm lovin' it. Zinc shelves and boxes provide storage options. And that map! Maps are a little obsession of mine. We'll save those for another week.

Zinc boxes are a must have in the vintage style space. These are great for extra storage. They can also be stacked and topped with architectural salvage pieces to create unique end/side tables.

This zinc topped buffet/server has so many possibilities. The drawers make it serviceable in just about any room. I can see it in a kitchen, dining area, study, media room or laundry room. Remove the the top piece
and you have the coolest kitchen island ever.

Industrial Finds...and a great big "owie"...hazards of the job

Ok ladies and gentlemen...

Below you will find pics of the awesome industrial
finds I un-earthed Friday afternoon at the industrial salvage yard.

Be sure to read all the way through to the end to find

out how the life of a junkin' queen can be very hazardous.

Way cool grey lockers.

Funky blue lockers. These are really cool because where the

blue paint is chipping off,

it shows the beautiful TURQUOISE paint underneath.

Hubby fixed that bent leg too.

Diamond plate step stool painted with TURQUOISE paint.

File cabinet drawers painted TURQUOISE.

At some point, turquoise must have been the industrial color.

Tin decimal equivalents chart. I love number graphics...

ok almost any graphics.

I got two of these heavy duty industrial shelving units.

I think these would make funky bar units.

Think of them all loaded up with vintage

bar ware and your fav liquors.

Again with graphics love.

These babies are about 7 feet long.

Laser cut lettering on aluminum.

More signs with laser cut lettering on aluminum.

These are about 2 1/2 feet long.

I think one of these would look cool on the wall over one

of the industrial shelving units (above), used as a bar.

This one I might keep. After all, everyone who knows me well,

knows that I am definitley a

NON-CONFORMING GIRL.

now, (as Paul Harvey would say) the rest of the story...

See these three very large, very heavy locker units.

I orginally had them lined up in the driveway the opposite way.

The front of one, facing the back of another.
I was happily cleaning them and I
had gotten to the last one. I was crouched down,

scrubbing the inside of the lockers when the wind

kicked up and toppled the first one over!

Picture DOMINOES...falling...

Yup, all three locker units landed on me! ALL THREE!

Luckily, hubby was working nearby in the barn.

I am left with two HUGE goose eggs on my head

(which, by the way, took the brunt of the falling lockers),

a sore shoulder and some cuts and bruises.

So...off to bed I go, loaded up with Ibuprofen and ice packs!

Tomorrow, it's off to the barn with my finds to set up my space.

I'm hoping that I don't feel like a ton of lockers fell on me by then!

Industrial Salvage Yard Teaser

What did I spend this chilly, cloudy afternoon doing?

Roaming, climbing, digging, lifting and hauling industrial treasures from this industrial salvage yard.

I have been wanting to "get in" here for quite a while.

A very good friend hooked me up with the

owner and "in" I got indeed! Up to my ankles "in" mud...

I was smart and wore my knee high rubber boots!

I had an absolute BLAST!

Thank goodness hubby came along to help! He gets extra points for this afternoon.

We filled up his truck and mine!

I can not wait to go back and dig some more!

Tomorrow will be spent scrubbing and cleaning my new

treasures so I can haul them to the barn for our next Tag Sale.

One of the many things I love about vintage decor is that there are so many possibilities with any one piece.

One way cool statement piece can inspire an entire room redo or provide the finishing touch to a room in progress. Such is the case with this totally hip chair I scored yesterday...

...what a find! I love it!

I can see it beside a roaring fireplace in a mountain cabin.

Isn't she a beauty? A beautiful french armoire. I was going to repaint her but I just ran out of time. So I brought her up to the shop just the way she was when I found her.

A pretty little velvet upholstered chair topped with a velvet rosette pillow...love it!

The velvet chair is complimented by a chic little velvet foot stool.

A vintage silver platter makes a great base for black tea lights, topped with a black vintage bird cage.

The spiders are wired on and can be easily removed after Halloween. Attach some different accents and use different tea lights, votives or other seasonal accents and you'll have a new vignette for each holiday.

A vintage silver candelabra with black tapers looks perfectly spooky next to a vintage copper tray and cups. The perfect set up to serve cider on the buffet at your Halloween party.

Antique, french bisque statues. I think the gryphons give them a gothic flair.

As a 4 year old, Hannah watched as a wild bird fell to the ground after colliding with a glass door. Hannah ran to the bird and cradled it in her tiny hands, asking it to "sing and fly." As Hannah stroked the tiny bird, it regained it's bearings, recovered from shock and took flight. Hannah was sure that her love had willed the little bird to again, "sing and fly."

Lesson learned...we are all connected.

If we all support and love, encourage and embrace each other, it is easier for us each to

"sing and fly."

So with Dore and Hannah's permission, I present to you three versions of the

"Sing and Fly" hand stamped pendant.

They are hand stamped by "moi" on heavy gauge aluminum.

I have designed three styles. A 2" long rectangle style,

a 1 1/4" round style and a 1" round style. Each hangs from a 21" delicate ball chain.

Estate Sale Treasures (with stories and history!)

This weekend I attended a local estate sale. This sale was the kind of sale that makes me tingle all over!! The kind of sale I stay at for hours and don't want to leave. It was at a neat old house by McDaniel College in Westminster. The sale was being held by three brothers who grew up in the house. Their father has passed on and their mother is in an assisted living facility. As I wondered around the house from room to room and picked out items, one of the brothers would tell me stories about the items I was purchasing. I love knowing at least some of the history behind the treasures that I purchase. It seems that knowing their history makes them come alive for me. Isn't she a beauty! She's very old and very French! She also has a coat of light green paint that does not amuse me. I think a coat of white paint will bring out her beauty! What do you think? Leave it or paint it?

has a hidden drawer on the side!

Wow! I love her! She has an old repair where the pedestal meets the base of the bust, but it's solidly repaired and unnoticeable when she is on display.

These spoke to me...

the faces are so soft and detailed.

This tapestry is 53" wide x 39" tall. The man at the estate sale told me that his father was stationed in Germany in World War II. The tapestry was salvaged by his father from a bombed out house in Germany and sent home as a gift to his mother. It is almost pristine. There is a small tear in the lower left corner...no stains...amazing!

A pair of old chalkware wall shelves with just the right amount of chippy patina.

Look at that little red shoe form! Don't see 'em in red very often. The one on the left is for a ladies shoe.

Great vintage letterpress storage boxes, a great old red wooden tool box and antique hardware!

This letterpress storage box has numbers in it...I just love numbered things!

This religious print has some stains but it adds to it's charm and character.

Love this framed picture! Old books are always a favorite of mine. Especially ones that have

beautiful embossed covers.

This beautiful old mirror has some great details on it's frame and the perfect amount

of crackling in the silvering.

Vintage white wood and black metal ironing board. I was thinking "cool side table" when I bought this beauty. My sister-in-law was thinking "cool portable desk". I liked her idea better, so I went with it. As a sturdy desk for a small area, this baby can't be beat! It's light weight and folds up for easy storage when extra space is needed.

These vintage posters are 1930's movie theatre posters from Showells Theatre in Ocean City, Maryland. Notice how they advertise that the theater is "cool and comfortable".

This was when air conditioning was the newest thing.

Way cool vintage Royal typewriter on a vintage typewriter table.

These chic mid-century chairs are a beautiful pearly white.

Always favorites of mine...galvanized metal, enamel ware and vintage advertising.

Ok...these almost stayed at home on my porch! The vintage red cooler is galvanized metal inside with the original tray. Vintage Coke crates in yellow and red. The chair is a 1940's wicker rocker.

WOW! This is soooo way cool! An antique wood postal box with

33 slots for tons of storage and organization! Paired with the ever popular metal basket and industrial metal carrier, you'll have the coolest office space in town.

In keeping with our vintage postal box...we have vintage post office box fronts from the 1950's. The number graphics and ornate heavy metal make these babies little works of art.

These would look great lined up on an office wall.

Ready for a vintage style summer camping trip? Vintage suitcases in "retro teal" with white trim can be used in so many ways. I can never pass up a vintage thermos and this one called to me

with it's beautiful green color...a great accent piece.

The enamel ware container with lid is a great storage/organizational piece with vintage flair

Metal, metal, metal...I can never get enough metal.

A great vintage film tin, silver urn, metal canister,

vintage flashlights and vintage yard sticks.

These are small pieces that pack a lot of punch when you're decorating.

Ok...this piece is soooo awesome! I'm having trouble parting with it! It may just end up in my kitchen. It was purchased at an antique store in Belgium and carried back on the plane by hand.

This cute little girlie is full of nostalgia. This print was a give-away from a grocery and confectionery store in Frederick, Maryland around the turn of the century.

A little gothic touch keeps this antique, victorian parasol from being too "frufru." She's made of

black silk, trimmed with black chantilly lace.

How cool is this? An antique accordion with it's original case. It works too!

This antique mirror has so much character.

Check out the great graphics on this old biscuit tin.

Another great vintage piece for storage. A little old chippy, black medicine cabinet.

The middle section of this is a mirror (sorry, it's reflecting the barn rafters)

flanked by two old scenic rural prints.

Create an instant family heirloom...ok, so it's not your family. It always makes me a bit sad when these old pieces are no longer loved and cherished by their original families.

Trio of black framed mirrors. The large one in the back is a wonderful vintage piece with great crackling on the silver mirroring. The two small ones are newer pieces with a vintage look. They pair up great together.

Wouldn't this make a great work desk! It's a sturdy old work bench. Tomorrow it will get a good sanding and a pretty, vintage style drawer pull to replace that old ugly one.

I love old muffin tins (there's that metal thing again) for storing my jewelry. They are also great on the desk for all those small office supplies (rubber bands, paper clips, push pins etc.) Vintage enamel ware pie tins and plates make great magnetic memo boards. They look great grouped together on a wall or placed on an entry table as a catch all for keys, mail etc.

How lucky was I to come across TWO great sets of vintage hardware in one weekend?

I can't get enough of ticking and burlap! So I put 'em together for some cool new pillows.

This awesome writing desk came from the CONGRESSIONAL COUNTRY CLUB in Bethesda Maryland. It's last owner purchased it nearly 50 years ago when the country club was remodeled and redecorated. It features a pull out drawer/writing area with ink well and covered storage area.

Awesome for desk storage and organization. Vintage, patterned baking pans with handles.

I have been busy at the sewing machine! Stylish little zippered pouches for makeup, change, ipods etc. Some are made with vintage fabrics and some are made with fabric remnants from past projects.

Love this chippy grey chair! I never, ever pass up cool wood chairs with flat seats. Since they are flat, they can be used as bedside tables, end tables etc. Of course they are always great for extra seating too...

Vintage thermoses, sea themed oil paintings on canvas and seashell items abound this month.

Vintage rusty tin box, galvanized tin boxes that I embellished and a totally awesome vintage polaroid.

I love anything galvanized or zinc! I fell in love with these little boxes (boxes and bottles are a reccuring theme for me also) but had to add some embellishment. Little birdies and english maps...so cool for desk top organizing.

More vintage chemistry beakers (these are a new fascination for me) and a vintage allergy test box.

Vintage, european art and architecture books.

Ok...we all know that I LOVE silver, zinc, galvanized metal, old aluminum and chalkboards. This month, I combined them all and added some chalkboard paint to some pieces. By the time of the sale, these will also have little herbs (lavender...another favorite of mine) planted in them for you to take home and grow.

Silver trays with added embellishment. I also added hangers on the back, so they can be hung on the wall.

Vintage tray becomes chalkboard...one of my favorite ways to repurpose! I added hangers on the back, in each direction, so you can hang it any way you like.

Don't these just scream SUMMER? Vintage, yellow enamel ware

and a vintage Catalina souvenir spoon rest.

Vintage, blue and yellow flower glasses. Pair up these babies with the yellow enamel

ware and you are ready for a vintage style summer cook-out.

Vintage clocks. I adore vintage travel clocks!

Vintage tole ware tins and really neat vintage train slips.

Vintage, galvanized metal watering can and a vintage aluminum basin. Together, these are "vintage style cook-out decor!" Plant some pretty little begonias in the watering can and place it beside the aluminum pan, filled with ice and bottled drinks. And don't forget that rusty little iron kettle sitting beside them. It needs some flowers too!
