Elements of Vintage Style...BURLAP!

This weeks Element of Vintage Style...BURLAP!
Burlap is rustic, textural and charming all at the same time. Me, I love to use it for curtains, ornamental pillows and table runners. I love the look of burlap on chairs, but lets face it...it's a bit uncomfortable to curl up in a burlap covered chair and read your favorite decorating mags. Burlap is one of my "must haves" in decorating but I tend to use it to add texture and for it's aspects of vintage charm. Burlap evokes a time when a trip to town meant bringing home burlap bags of goods and livestock feed. A time when everything was repurposed and reused....even burlap. My mom cringes everytime I mention burlap in conjunction with home decor but...I. JUST. CAN'T. GET. ENOUGH!

Curtains are my favorite use of burlap. I have them in my kitchen and I am getting ready to add them to my living room.

The ever functional burlap note board. Organizational with rustic charm. Lovin' the red striping here!

I love burlap on ornamental pillows. They add just the right amount of texture especially when
combined with linen.

A wispy piece of burlap is the finishing touch for this little table setting.

When in doubt...add burlap. Rustic charm is added to a pristine white chair simply by adding a burlap garland ribbon.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am really into contrasts. Burlap with bling makes for unique napkin rings with charm.

Pick a room, grab some burlap and stencils and DEFINE THAT ROOM!

Burlap shade on a chippy, white vintage lamp. Since flowers are another favorite of mine...I'm lovin' this!

Flowers and burlap again.
This time on a welcoming wreath. This one is great for any time of year.

Burlap ON the bed..not so much. Burlap OVER the bed....YES!

Long yummy panels of burlap!

A little burlap hassock...way too cool!

Elements of Vintage Style...NUMBERS!

This weeks Element of Vintage Style...NUMBERS!

I LOVE GRAPHICS...
I LOVE NUMBERS...
I LOVE NUMBER GRAPHICS!

Numbers have become a staple of vintage style decor. They are on everything from pillows to floors.
What is it about them that screams vintage style?
I'm not sure but I can't get enough!

Vintage military lockers make great storage! Numbers on the side, numbers on the front. What more could we ask for?

One of my all time favs. I am actually working on my steps at home in this same style. I have painted the risers black. I plan to warm up the wood steps with some stain and wax. I think I am going to do the numbers in red or white.

The numbered drawers on this chest are reminiscent of antique apothecary cabinets. Lots of storage and organization options here.

These pillows have an industrial edge that I am really diggin'.

How about these...a basket for each member of the household to catch all those little items that always need to go "back upstairs." The burlap edge with red ticking gives them a little rustic country flair.

Who wouldn't love a cabinet full of these creamy white numbered cups?

Great idea for some porch decor. Old escutcheon plates with numbers added. A unique way to display your house number.

Who ever has enough canisters in their kitchen. Numbered canisters make a bold statement on this pantry shelf.

Three boldly numbered plates draw your eye above the mundane everyday items displayed on this shelf.

Another fav of mine. Black and White color combo. Lovin' these!

A vintage time card holder with original numbers. Just like it is, with it's vintage time cards, it's cool. But you have so many organizational options with one of these.

A FuNkY, yet functional use of numbers.

We can all use some order in our mudroom or entryway.

Can't get enough of the numbered baskets. In this case, the numbers are printed on the liners. A nice little do-it-yourself project when you find some great priced vintage baskets.

Elements of Vintage Style...MAPS

This weeks Element of Vintage Style...MAPS

I love maps! Maybe it's my love of graphics that make them so appealing me. Maybe it's the colors.
I'm not sure what makes them so charming
to me but whatever it is, I'm most certainly not the only one.
Maps have become a huge thing in the vintage style decor market.
Sure, there are great repros out there but when you can get your hands on the real mccoy the satisfaction is much greater. My favs are the old roll down versions that hung in classrooms. Framed maps of some of our favorite family destinations are a close runner-up.

I love everything about this room. The bold color on the walls. The chippy farmhouse table. The chest...and mmmm that globe. The color on the table is followed through in the color chosen for the walls in the next room. The color of the chest is a mix of the two colors. It all makes for a nice transition from bold to subtle color. This room has quite an impact.

Nautical maps are really great for beach houses, lake houses and bay front homes. A whole theme has been built around this nautical map. I love how the frame is just placed over the map instead of actually framing it. Very simple things are done here that create a ton of visual interest in this otherwise bare corner.

Judging from the uniform size of these maps and the edge trim, I'm guessing these maps are from a vintage atlas. These can easily be removed and framed or hung just like this..."in the buff."

Without the map this would be a boring, uninspiring little study space. This one proves what an impact maps have on a space. Love the groovy little skull and crossbones trash can.

This is an ingenious use of maps! A lot of people love the look of mulitiple paned doors but still want their privacy. You get the effect of the panes but still maintain privacy. The panes become individual frames for the maps. Love it!!

Graphics, texture and color...well done! The theatre seats are just too cool. I think what I love most here is the contrast of the print on the quilt and the graphics on the map. The contrast in the deep wood tones of the chairs are perfect against crisp white walls and the white bed.

This is simply inspired..love it!

This map warms up an otherwise cold unwelcoming entry hallway. Love the shade on the lamp too.

Vintage Decor...New Items in the Shop...Tag Sale Time!!

It's Tag Sale Time Again!
Check out some of the items at Livingston Street Decor...

Are you absolutley lovin' this? I am!
Well worn chicken nesting boxes with great patina.
I adore the ironstone pieces against the galvanized metal. Display your collections or organize your mudroom or craft room with this beauty. It can be mounted on the wall or placed on top of a favorite vintage server, buffet or chest of drawers.

Vintage gameboard.
I love this piece! In fact, I have one very similar to it on my front porch. It sits on a vintage aluminum table and hubby and I play evening checker games on it in the summer.
Mounted on a wall it is an instant vintage art piece.

The perfect little red metal stool.

What a great find! My favorite picker found this for me! Such a charming vintage chalkboard. It was hard not to just keep this one at home in my kitchen!

You'll begin to sense a "school" theme here. Vintage wood school desk/chair combo. Beautiful, richly aged wood. Imagine all of the learning that took place at this little beauty.

They don't make 'em like this any more! A vintage metal globe with awesome colors and graphics.
Today, if you buy a globe at the store it will be cheap molded plastic with paper graphics pasted on...
not really built to last. This metal beauty has stood the test of time.

Another beautiful vintage wood school chair.
Lots of wood and metal boxes.See that little shoe store stool at the bottom. I remember, when I was a little girl, propping my feet up on these to have the shoe store clerk measure my feet on one of those little "slidy" measuring things.

Vintage decanters and elegant vintage statuary. More industrial signage. I love the contrasts here!

Lots of vintage bar ware this month.
My favs are silver rimmed pieces.

Lovin' these turquoise glasses. Beautiful! They remind me of old turquoise canning jars. Another fav of mine.
